Dowdy Announces Launch of Formalized Registered Apprenticeship Program to Build Next-Generation Workforce

Dowdy is proud to announce the launch of its comprehensive, Registered Apprenticeship Program, developed in partnership with the State of Florida Department of Education. This innovative initiative reflects Dowdy’s commitment to developing a highly skilled, industry-leading workforce dedicated to excellence in commercial plumbing, site development, and heavy equipment operation.

The program features three specialized career pathways designed to support departmental success and foster professional growth.

Plumber Pathway
Participants will gain extensive hands-on experience in piping and plumbing installation and maintenance. The curriculum covers a wide range of piping materials—including ABS, PVC, CPVC, cast iron, galvanized pipe, copper, PE, PEX, and ductile iron—and includes training in drainage, ventilation, water distribution, fixture installation, gas lines, troubleshooting, and safety procedures. The program emphasizes both technical skills and blueprint reading, building a strong foundation for a successful career in plumbing.

Craft Construction Labor – Pipe Laying or Heavy Equipment Operating
This pathway offers comprehensive training in earthwork, utility installation, demolition, and site restoration.

The Pipe Laying concentration focuses on excavation, utility locating, pipe installation, and advanced skills such as water and sewer tapping and site surveying.

The Heavy Equipment Operating concentration progresses from basic machinery operation to precise site grading and utility trenching, preparing participants for skilled roles in site development.

Operating Engineer Pathway
Combining the Pipe Layer and Heavy Equipment curricula, this pathway provides advanced on-the-job training for up-and-coming Site Managers. The program emphasizes proficiency with heavy machinery, site grading, utility trenching, and project management skills, preparing participants for leadership roles in construction and site development.

“Our mission is to provide high-quality training that equips our apprentices with the skills necessary to excel in their careers,” said Jennifer Lewis, CEO of Dowdy. “Through this program, we’re investing in the future of our workforce and ensuring that Dowdy continues to set the standard for excellence in the industry.”

The apprenticeship program features a time-based training approach, combining on-the-job training with targeted supplemental instruction designed to prepare apprentices for successful careers in their chosen fields.

Employees who complete their selected program will receive a recognized completion certificate from the State of Florida. Additionally, those who complete the Plumber Pathway will be eligible to take the licensing exam to become licensed Journeymen in Plumbing, opening further career advancement opportunities.

The program is currently exclusive to Dowdy employees, underscoring the company’s dedication to fostering internal talent and promoting career advancement.

Further employee communication will be shared regarding how to apply as Dowdy finalizes internal processes ahead of the program’s April 1 launch date.
